Sleep apnea screening and custom oral sleep appliances at Crestmont Dental in SW Calgary. A quieter, more comfortable alternative to CPAP for mild-to-moderate sleep apnea.

Sleep Apnea & Oral Sleep Appliances

Your dentist may be the first healthcare provider to notice signs of sleep apnea — and one of the most effective at treating it.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs when the soft tissues of the throat collapse during sleep, partially or completely blocking the airway. It affects an estimated 1 in 4 Canadians, and the majority remain undiagnosed.

How Dentists Help

At Crestmont Dental, we offer:

  • Sleep apnea screening — a brief questionnaire and clinical assessment to identify patients at risk
  • Referral for a sleep study — if indicated
  • Custom oral sleep appliances — for patients with confirmed mild-to-moderate OSA, or for those who cannot tolerate CPAP

What Is an Oral Sleep Appliance?

An oral sleep appliance is a custom-fitted mouthguard worn during sleep. It works by gently advancing the lower jaw forward, which keeps the airway open and prevents the soft tissue collapse that causes apnea events and snoring.

For many patients with mild-to-moderate OSA, an oral appliance is as effective as CPAP — and significantly more comfortable to wear consistently.

Is This Right for Me?

An oral sleep appliance may be a good option if:

  • You’ve been diagnosed with mild-to-moderate obstructive sleep apnea
  • You snore loudly and your partner or family has noticed breathing pauses during sleep
  • You struggle to tolerate your CPAP mask
  • You travel frequently and want a simpler, portable solution

We work alongside your physician and sleep specialist to ensure the right treatment approach for your situation.
