Dental Hygiene at Crestmont Dental

A professional cleaning is the foundation of a healthy mouth. Even with excellent brushing and flossing at home, there are areas of the mouth that are simply impossible to keep clean without professional tools and training.

Our registered dental hygienists take time to do it properly — no rushing, no cutting corners.

What Happens During a Hygiene Appointment?

A standard hygiene visit at Crestmont Dental includes:

  • Removal of plaque and calculus (tartar) above and below the gumline
  • Air polishing — a gentle, highly effective alternative to traditional scaling that removes surface staining and biofilm with minimal sensitivity
  • Flossing and a fluoride treatment
  • An oral cancer screening
  • A gum health assessment (pocket depths, recession, bleeding)
  • Personalized home care recommendations

Air Polishing — Why Our Patients Love It

We use air polishing as part of our hygiene protocol — a technique that uses a fine jet of air, water, and powder to gently remove staining and bacterial biofilm. Compared to traditional rubber cup polishing, it’s:

  • More comfortable (especially for sensitive teeth)
  • More effective at removing surface stain
  • Better at reaching interproximal spaces between teeth
  • Faster and gentler on enamel

Most patients are noticeably surprised by how clean and smooth their teeth feel after air polishing.

How Often Should I Come In?

For most patients, every six months is the standard recommendation. However, if you have a history of gum disease, are undergoing orthodontic treatment, or have other risk factors, your hygienist may recommend more frequent visits (every 3–4 months).

We’ll recommend what’s right for you specifically — not a one-size-fits-all schedule.
