Crestmont Dental — SW Calgary
Sedation dentistry isn't just for extreme cases. It's for anyone who wants their appointment to be easier. We offer three levels of sedation — all available in-clinic, all administered by Dr. Olsen.
Call to Book a ConsultWhy It Matters
IV conscious sedation is typically only available in hospital settings or through an anesthesiologist referral. Dr. Olsen completed her General Practice Residency at Foothills Medical Centre — one of Alberta's largest academic hospitals — where she trained extensively in IV sedation protocols.
That means patients who need deeper sedation don't have to be referred out. They don't have to tell their story to a stranger in an unfamiliar room. They get the full level of care they need, from a dentist they already trust, in a clinic that already knows them.
It also means we can consolidate treatment. Patients with significant dental needs — multiple extractions, full-mouth restorations — can often accomplish in one or two sedation appointments what would otherwise take months of weekly visits.
Your Options
We'll help you choose the right level at your consultation — there's no single answer that works for everyone.
The lightest option
Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is inhaled through a small mask placed over your nose. It takes effect in minutes, produces a pleasant, floating sensation, and wears off completely within minutes of removal. You can drive yourself home afterward. It's a great choice for patients who are mildly anxious or just want to take the edge off.
Best for: Mild anxiety, routine cleanings, kids, patients who want to drive home
Relax deeply, stay conscious
A prescription sedative is given to you at the office before treatment begins. Within a short time, you're deeply relaxed — aware of what's happening but calm, comfortable, and unlikely to remember much of the procedure. Oral sedation allows us to work longer and more efficiently, which often means fewer total appointments. You'll need someone to drive you home.
Best for: Moderate anxiety, multiple procedures in one visit, dental phobia
The deepest, safest comfort
IV sedation is administered through a small IV line, allowing Dr. Olsen to precisely control the depth of sedation throughout your appointment. You remain conscious and able to respond, but deeply relaxed — most patients have little to no memory of the procedure. This is our most powerful tool for severe anxiety, complex procedures, or patients with special needs.
Best for: Severe anxiety, complex or lengthy procedures, special needs patients, previous trauma
For oral and IV sedation, you'll need a trusted adult to drive you to and from your appointment — you won't be able to drive or operate machinery for the rest of the day.
We'll send you detailed preparation instructions after booking, including any fasting requirements. These vary depending on the type and depth of sedation.
Most patients feel fully themselves by the following morning. Some mild grogginess the day of your appointment is normal and expected.
